How Facebook.com is killing Online Dating as we know it.
I’m guessing you’ve heard the song "Video Killed the Radio Star". Well, it looks like the ever advancing evolution of technology is once again committing murder! OK, murder is a bit harsh, but it’s starting to look like the Internet dating business is getting pretty badly beaten up - and Facebook.com is the guilty culprit.
Unless you have had your head in the sand for the last year or two you know of the Online phenomenon called Facebook.com. Facebook.com is a "Social Networking Website " which, as WikiPedia puts it, is "offering an interactive, user-submitted network of friends, personal profiles, blogs, groups, photos, music, and videos." It’s big too, according to Alexa, it is in the top 5 of the largest websites and it is so influential that it is rapidly becoming a mainstay of contemporary pop culture. Unless your granny has passed into the great beyond, I’ll bet she has a Facebook.com page.
So, what does Facebook.com have to do with Online dating? It’s simple - it’s all about "social networking". You could say that dating sites are the opposite of social networking sites. They offer a database of singles with whom other singles may meet. They are fundamentally designed to introduce a single person to another single person with the intention of creating an "off-line" or real life relationship. It’s a lot like someone setting you up with his cousin - you’ve heard it before: "she’s really nice - you have so much in common". Good luck with that.

Facebook.com, on the other hand, is akin to a party where everyone is invited to drop in, and everyone, singles included, are encouraged to mingle. The cool part is that Facebook.com party goers can easily seek out people with whom they have common interests. With each displaying his or her interests and dreams on their shirt-fronts (aka Facebook profile), it’s a no-brainer that like minded people will find each other.
Interested people are encouraged to introduce themselves, and like a party, they introduce new people to their existing group of friends. In theory, at the end of the party everyone has met a couple of new friends. From there it’s just a matter of figuring out who wants to date whom in "real life" here on earth.
There you have it: Facebook.com's MO (modus operandi) is killing traditional Online dating. The final kick is that Facebook.com is free and dating sites, with a few exceptions like CyberDating.net, are not. Please join me in a few minutes of silence in respect for the deceased.
Thank You
